ERIK. “So how did it get so, well…critical?” I asked, my hands pressed tight to my hips.

“It’s almost impossible to determine for sure, but he has about ten percent of the use of his remaining kidney. So, technically, he has five percent of what you have,” the doctor explained.

“And the dialysis?” I asked, looking down at the floor.

“He’s been on dialysis for three weeks. Some do well with dialysis, others not so well. I would have to check to be certain, but if memory serves me correctly, he’s been three or four times a week,” he said.

“What’s the bottom line, doc?” I asked.

“He’s dying, Erik. The dialysis causes anemia, the anemia is countered by the iron we’re giving him, he’s just…well, he’s just dying,” he responded in a very matter of fact tone.

“Wrong answer, doc. What can we do?” I asked.

“There’s nothing that can be done now, it’s just a matter of time,” he responded again, looking at his watch.

“I appreciate you meeting me down here,” I said as I extended my hand.

He extended his arm and shook my hand.

“I’ve got another…” he stammered, again looking at his watch.

“I understand. Again, thank you. I uhhmm…one thing. I need one thing,” I said, turning to face him again.

“Yes?” he asked.

“I’m on the sheet. I’m listed as family, correct?” I asked.

He nodded before he looked at the screen of his iPad, “Yes here it is, Erik Ead. You are.”

“Make note. If anything happens, you call me. Not Kelli. You call me. No exceptions, understand?”

“I’ll make note of it,” he said.

“Make note now, doc. Do it now,” I demanded.

“Consider it done,” he said as he scribbled on his pad.

“Thanks, doc,” I said as he turned to walk away.

I walked out of the waiting room and turned down the hallway. I slowed my walk down and took my time. I was not looking forward to this. As I approached the room, I took a deep breath and exhaled.

I slowly opened the door. Kelli sat on the edge of the bed, looking at her father’s face, whispering to him quietly. It was apparent she had been crying. She turned to face me, and quickly wiped her face, checking for tears.

I walked to the foot of the bed and reached down to touch Gene’s feet. They felt cold. I covered them with the blanket and tucked it under his heels.

“Son, how you doing?” he asked in a raspy voice.

“I’m doing well, Gene. You need to get your ass out of here, the dealer is going to go to hell without you. They’ll be giving cars away before you know it,” I said, trying to change the mood a little.

“Get me a wheelchair in here. Hell, if you can fit me in the trunk of your M, we can skedaddle,” he chuckled.

The chuckle produced a cough.

He was dying. He looked like a different man in a matter of a few weeks. Seeing him sickened me. I stood and wondered why I couldn’t have his blood type. I would sacrifice all that I had for this man.
